St. Louis County Library Foundation Receives $ 1 million Grant From Emerson for Center for Family History

Emerson has awarded a $ 1 million grant to the St. Louis County Library Foundation for its new Center for Family History to be located in Chesterfield, MO. The Center is being built to house the exceptional genealogy collection of St. Louis County Library.

“The Center for Family History will be a great asset to the St. Louis community,” said Pat Sly, Emerson’s executive vice president. “Emerson is committed to the development of the Center and the strong connection to history that it will foster.”

The grant from Emerson is a lead gift towards a final Capital Campaign goal of $ 18 million. According to Barbara Turkington, the Assistant Director for Advancement for St. Louis County Library. The gift will be used for the new facility’s 350-seat auditorium.

“This grant from Emerson will go a long way in supporting the development of the Center for Family History. On behalf of the St. Louis County Library Foundation, I would like to thank Emerson for their generous contribution,” said Turkington.

St. Louis County Library has an extensive collection of genealogical resources that include over 100 rare Yizkor books memorializing destroyed Jewish communities in Europe with a list of Holocaust victims, the Julius K. Hunter African American Research Collection, the St. Louis Genealogy collection and more. The collection, which is regularly recognized for its excellence, was previously housed at St. Louis County Library Headquarters but it has recently outgrown the space. The Center for Family History, a 57,000 sq. ft. facility when completed, will be one of only two facilities of its kind in the United States. It will incorporate a large meeting/auditorium space and a pre-function area for special events, weddings and family reunions. It will also house the “Hall of Families”, which will capture the spirit and legend of companies and individuals throughout the Midwest. There are plans to break ground on the Center in 2012.
